Outschool application Process
If you’re new here, my name is Nikki and I’ve been teaching online since 2016, but I joined Outschool in late 2020. I teach anywhere from 8-12 hours a week on Outschool. The average pay is $40/hr at Outschool, but the great part is that classes are affordable for parents because they use a group class model. One-on-one classes are available as well, though. I offer both and once we get you through the application process, I’ll teach you how to make your classes stand out from the crowd.
What is Outschool?
Outschool is a platform that was originally geared towards homeschool students, but during the pandemic they opened it up to all students.
They use Zoom to teach students. You can teach any subject or hobby.
Some examples of Outschool classes are:
- Cooking
- Knitting
- Spanish
- Writing
- Math
- Gaming
- Coding
- History
- Science
- Hosting a birthday
- Social clubs
The list goes on. Since you can teach any subject or hobby, you don’t need a degree to apply, but you do need experience in your subject area.
5 Step outschool application process
Step 1 – Fill out the online application form with general information about you, your experience with the classes you want to teach and why you want to teach them.
Step 2 – Provide a video in the initial application. *Important: Be aware that with the Outschool application process you will have to create 2 videos. When you fill out the initial application you will need to make an introductory video for company. This preliminary video is for Outschool to see if you’re a good fit. How will they determine this?
In your preliminary video they will want to see the following:
- Good lighting
- A headset unless you will be teaching music, in which case you might want to showcase playing the instrument
- Confidence in your subject area
- What you will teach
- Your educational background
- Your experience in the subject or hobby you want to teach
Requirements to work at outschool
The nice thing about Outschool is that they don’t require formal teaching credentials. You can be 18 or older, so you don’t even need a bachelor’s degree. However you do need to live in the US, the UK, Canada, Australia or New Zealand.
“Outschool does not require formal teaching credentials. We believe that many adults can offer rewarding classes based on their experience and interests. We do require criminal background checks before your first class starts. Teachers must be residents of the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand or the United Kingdom.”
Outschool
You will need at least 3MBPS upload and download speed to use the Zoom platform for teaching your classes.
outschool application video
Here’s a transcript of what you can say in your Outschool application video if you’re an experienced teacher.
“Hi, I’m ________. I have been teaching since ___________. I have experience teaching _________. In my class it’s important that the students feel welcome and excited about learning. I do this by connecting with the students and providing them choices for what activities they want to do. I look forward to teaching at Outschool!”
Here’s a transcript of what you can say in your Outschool application video if you don’t have a teaching background.
“Hi, I’m ________. I have been doing (state your hobby or passion) since ___________. I have experience doing this with kids _________ and they tell me they enjoy my classes because. In my class it’s important that the students feel welcome and excited about learning. I do this by connecting with the students and providing them choices for what activities they want to do. I look forward to teaching at Outschool!”
outschool background check
If you have recently gotten a background check, then your Outschool background check should be completed fairly quickly. If you haven’t gotten one recently it might take awhile.
Right now, Outschool can only do background checks for people living in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK and the US.

outschool support
I’m happy to provide you all of the Outschool support you may need when you get started. I’ve got tips for class ideas and can answer any questions you may have via e-mail.
I’m a US citizen currently living in Europe. Could I still apply? I have taught 8 years, and been with VIPKID full-time for two years.
Hi Emily, I would go ahead and apply. They use Zoom for their lessons.
Hi Nikki, would they employ someone from South Africa?
Hi Yolandi, not right now. I guess it’s due to the background check. Maybe join the FB group New and Future Outschool Teachers or send an e-mail and inquire about it. Perhaps if more people inquire they will open up the option for SA teachers.
do they hire teachers from Northern Ireland with an Irish passport?
I could technically get UK passport if I wanted to. haha.
Hi Aine, I think you would need a UK passport.
Hi Nikki.
I have a UK passport but I live in Italy and I have qualifications from South Africa (my university degrees and TEFL certificate).
Would this be acceptable?
Hi Sadie, I think you should be good with a UK passport. Keep me posted!
Thanks Nikki, I will!
